“I am not what happened to me; I am what I choose to become. So, I will do what I can, with what I have, where I am”
A Legacy of Lifelong Impact
Anahita’s journey with British Columbia Mobility Opportunities Society (BCMOS) began with a desire to contribute to her community and a curiosity sparked by a captivating university lecture. After attending a guest lecture by Eric Molendyk, the program manager of ASABC, BCMOS and Tetra Society, Anahita was immediately drawn to the organization’s mission and the innovative equipment they design to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Inspired by Eric’s presentation and the stories he shared, Anahita decided to volunteer with the BCMOS program.
A Summer of Learning and Growth:
Anahita’s initial involvement with BCMOS focused on hiking and cycling activities. However, she soon found herself drawn to the paddling program, since she always loves spending time on the water. “I like land volunteering with the paddling program because I was obsessed with the water. I have loved swimming and any water activities since I was a kid. When we go for trips or vacations and if there’s the ocean or a swimming pool, I’m there. My dad would say I’m like a fish who doesn’t want to come out of the water,” Anahita shared.

As a land volunteer, Anahita played a crucial role in assisting participants, ensuring their safety, and maintaining a positive and inclusive atmosphere. She quickly discovered that her role extended beyond simply assisting with equipment.
“I learned so much about interacting with people with disabilities,” shares Anahita. “I realized that everyone is unique, and it’s crucial to be mindful of their individual needs and preferences. Some participants preferred independence, while others appreciated extra support. It was a valuable lesson in respecting individual needs and adapting my approach accordingly.”
Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence:
Anahita also encountered challenges along the way. “There were times when I felt unsure of how to best assist a participant,” she recalls. “Some participants preferred not to connect with us – they simply wanted to go into the water and enjoy the scenery – while others loved having a conversation. However, I learned to observe carefully, to be patient, and to communicate effectively. I also discovered the importance of teamwork and the value of supporting my fellow volunteers.”
One particularly memorable experience involved assisting a participant with limited mobility. “It was a bit challenging at first,” Anahita explains, “but I learned how to work with the participant and the other volunteers to ensure their safety and comfort. It was a rewarding experience, and it taught me the importance of adaptability and problem-solving.”

Personal Growth and Future Aspirations:
Anahita’s experiences with BCMOS have had a profound impact on her personal and professional growth. “Volunteering with BCMOS has significantly enhanced my communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills,” she says. “It has also deepened my understanding of disability and the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible environment for everyone.”
Anahita is hoping to pursue a degree in Physiotherapy, and she believes her experiences with BCMOS will be invaluable in her future career. “The skills I developed as a volunteer – communication, empathy, patience, and the ability to adapt to different situations – are all essential qualities for a successful physiotherapist,” she explains.
Inspiring Others:
Anahita’s story is a testament to the power of volunteerism to not only benefit the community but also to foster personal growth and development. Her dedication and compassion have made a significant impact on the lives of others, and she continues to be an inspiration to those around her.
